Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel was originally founded as Burnaby Funeral Directors June 1, 1934 by John Edward (Ted) Slavin. Ted, his wife May and his parents, Margaret and John would open North Burnaby’s first Funeral Home. The original building was purchased from the Royal Canadian Legion and was located at 4259 Hastings Street in North Burnaby. The family operated the business and became a large part of the newly forming Vancouver Heights area.

In 1949 Burnaby Funeral Directors moved across the street to it’s current location at 4276 Hastings Street, North Burnaby. This new location would also be the residence for the family. Ted’s son Ron became the Slavin’s third generation funeral director in 1952 and Ted’s nephew Charles Bonner joined the firm in 1959.

In 1982 Ron’s wife Nancy assumed the administration role within the firm and in 1985 Ron’s son, Tony became the family’s fourth generation funeral director. Tony’s wife Roslynn would later become the co-administrator until her death in 2006.

With expansion in mind the Slavin Family purchased the business of Bell Funeral Chapel from the Armstrong family in September of 2004. They would run the Bell Funeral Chapel in East Vancouver for two years until the property was sold to make way for a new development. It was at this time that Bell Funeral Chapel merged with Burnaby Funeral Directors to become the new Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel in North Burnaby.

Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel continues the tradition of exceptional service with compassion, dignity and respect. Our full time staff includes; Tony Slavin, General Manager; Shane Dickson, Manager; Devan Wilkie, Assistant Manager; Dean Buchignani, Funeral Director and Embalmer; Graham Steen, Funeral Director; Paige Tesluck, Office Administrator. We are a proud member of the Funeral Service Association of B.C., Funeral Service Association of Canada and the Better Business Bureau.
